SAILING LESSONS
Your U.S. Coast Guard licensed Master, Captain Sam, can give you sailing &
safety instruction and techniques. An informal lesson can be combined with a
charter. One or two people may want to learn about sailing while their
friends may want to kick back and relax.
EIGHT HOUR HANDS-ON BASIC SAILING COURSE
For those more serious minded people who want a certificate showing their
experience, the Basic Sailing Course is available. The course consists of
two 4 hour lessons. The first lesson is a one hour orientation to sailing
with literature followed by a 3 hour private sailing class on the water
the first day. Then a second four hour private sailing lesson on the water
is scheduled. Private lessons are scheduled for you or for you and your
group ("crew"). The training emphasis is flexible depending on the needs of
the student(s). By the end of the course you or you and your group should
be able to sail on your own.
In addition to the Basic Sailing Course, the U.S. Coast Guard Auxilliary
"Sailing Fundamentals" and the Parks and Wildlife Boater Education class room
courses are recommended. To get a head start, purchase and read the book
Sailing Fundamentals by Gary Jobdon.
The course content is listed on the certificate given at the end of the course
and identifies the skills covered in the course. The course content is:
* Safety at the Dock and Underway
* Dock Departure and Motor Handling
* Steering
* Terminology
* Tacking and Sail Trimming
* Rules of the Road and Responsibilities
* Buoy Navigation Aids and Related Responsibilities
* Sail Adjustments for Wind Gusts and Heavy Wind
